About

The Hill County Conservation District was established on April 19th 1946. HCCD was part of a wave of local conservation districts formed throughout the county in response to the resource crisis represented by the Dust Bowl Era. The mass loss of soil and livelihood that took place in the 1930s demonstrated the need for local representation for local resources.
Today Montana’s Conservation Districts represent the water, soil, and other natural resource needs of their communities. Each county has their own district that administers 310 stream permits and represents their community’s natural resource needs to legislators.
“The Function of the Conservation District: To take available technical, financial and educational resources, whatever their source, and focus or coordinate them so that they meet the needs of the local land user for conservation of soil, water, and related resources.”
- Pete Nowak
